Return to New York: Victims or Victimizers?

"I couldn't sleep on the 18 hours non-stop flight from Singapore to Newark, NJ. I was thinking about what's waiting for me after landing. I was going back to the city which I knew intimately. But I was also going back to New York - the city seen by many as the center of an unjust economic order which was destroying large parts of the impoverished world. Were New Yorkers victims or victimizers, or both?"
